Teacher Recognition: Helping Youth Authors

When I was in school, we did not have a creative writing teacher. I wonder how much different my life would have been if someone was teaching the one subject I loved the most.

Let me introduce to you Joanna Fox, a creative writing teacher at Booker Middle School in Sarasota, Florida. She earned her BA in English Education from USF and recently completed her MED in Curriculum and Instruction from American College of Education.

Joanna designed and developed the Creative Writing VPA Program in 2002. This program gives many Booker students an opportunity to receive local, national and international recognition for their writing.

Receiving attention for writing skills at a young age will catapult these students to a level that most authors only dream of achieving.

Joanna currently serves as Florida’s state coordinator for the NCTE Aspiring Young Writers program. She serves on the executive board of directors for the Florida Council of Teachers of English and has been appointed to serve as a representative for 2011 Literacy Education Advocacy Day in Washington, D.C.

During her eleven years at Booker, she has received a number of awards including FCTE Beginner Teacher of the Year, Booker Middle School’s Teacher of the Year (2004, 2008), FCTE State Teacher of Excellence and International River of Words – Teacher of Merit.

Joanna Fox is a perfect example of why the future looks bright for the next generation of authors.

I would also like to mention all the hardworking Language Arts teachers at Booker Middle School and wish them continued success:
